The Metaverse is the new futuristic idea of the Internet
Metaverse is the buzzword, and especially when Mark Zuckerberg has said that he expects his Facebook social network to become a metaverse in 5 years.
Metaverso is a virtual environment where each one introduces their reality to live in that virtual digital environment. And in there, people can meet others who are thousands of kilometers apart and carry out activities together such as playing games, attending concerts, buying objects, etc….
If someone remembers the “avatars” that were generated in the early 2000s in the Second Life program, this is something similar but amplified by Virtual Reality technology and with more possibilities.
With the metaverse people would not see a screen, but through their virtual reality glasses and wearing clothes with sensors, they can see and feel what is happening in the digital world in which they are immersed.
That is what the metaverse promises, a total immersion in a new digital world and with all kinds of possibilities, and that we all live there as long as possible.
Facebook is not the only company that talks about it, also companies dedicated to games like Fornite are investing a lot of money in that technology.
Facebook already has 10,000 people, 20% of its total workforce, working on it, and the others something similar.
I am clear that virtual reality can be useful for certain applications, but I am also very clear that I want to live a “real” life and not a virtual one, and I will not spend a large part of my time living outside my physical reality.
But it is also possible that I might be considered a bit strange, since I am not on social networks and I try to use my mobile as little as possible.
If we think that Facebook has 1,000 million users every day, and if they were able to offer an APP in which people enter at little cost (cheap VR glasses) to live there with their friends all kinds of experiences, it is more than possible that many people would, and Facebook would get even more and better data from all of its users, thereby making more revenue from the sale of that data.
Mr. Zuckerberg is not silly at all.
All APPs and social networks try to keep people in them for as long as possible, because the longer they stay, the more data they provide. If with virtual reality they get people to spend more time and do more activities, much better for them. More profit will be obtained.
That’s why gaming companies want to get in here too. Today the players share an online game, but if they shared other additional activities they would spend more time in that new “world” for the greater benefit of the company.
It remains to be seen how people evolve and if they get hooked on these digital worlds that they want to offer us. Time will tell.
