We all know that for a few years now a technological battle has been taking place between China and the USA, because the latter do not want to let the Chinese reach their technological levels and one day could surpass them. There is a lot at stake, it is about technological leadership, which in some way implies global leadership.

The technological battle between China and the USA intensifies more every day. The restrictions imposed by the US government on the Chinese semiconductor industry have put this crucial sector for the technological development of the Asian country in check. However, China has found a new weapon in its arsenal: chiplets

And the question that some may have is: what are chiplets? A chiplet is an electronic package that houses several chips under the same substrate. And in this way, starting from simpler chips, they are put together, connected on a substrate and a much more powerful chip is obtained.

Chiplets are small, self-contained processing blocks that can be assembled onto a single larger chip. This technology offers a series of advantages, such as:

  • Greater flexibility: Allows manufacturers to combine different types of chiplets to create custom chips for specific needs.
  • Improved performance: Allows better distribution of heat and energy, which translates into greater performance and efficiency.
  • Cost reduction: Being smaller and more modular, chiplets can be manufactured more economically than traditional chips.

And that is what some companies and also the Chinese do, and in the case of Chinese companies they are using chiplets to:

  • Develop high-end chips without needing the latest manufacturing technologies: By combining less advanced chiplets, they can create chips that compete in performance with the latest generation of US chips.
  • Reduce its dependence on American companies: Chiplet technology allows China to manufacture chips in its own facilities, without having to resort to companies such as TSMC or Samsung, which are subject to American restrictions.
  • Accelerate innovation: The flexibility of chiplet technology allows Chinese manufacturers to experiment and develop new technologies more quickly and efficiently.

It is still early to know what impact chiplet technology will have on the outcome of the technological battle between China and the US. However, it is clear that this technology has the potential to change the current rules of the game.

It is clear that those who exercise leadership power try by all means to maintain it as long as possible, while others fight to take it away. It has always been like this, and it always will be.
