Just two months ago, the news of the agreement between Waymo and one of the largest car companies (Renaul-Nissan) was published, so that the latter can use Waymo autonomous car technology in their vehicles to travel through France and Japan.

It is a very important step for both parties, and I think it confirms Waymo’s orientation in the autonomous car business.

Waymo is a technology company that does not manufacture cars. It develops a technology that can be used by car manufacturers, and is willing to negotiate with them.

I think it’s a pretty smart strategy to concentrate on what they know how to do well, and partner with others who also know how to do their products well, to get more sophisticated products between the two sides.

Both parties can win.

All the tests that Waymo has performed since its inception (and takes already more than 10 years), has been carried out by adapting “normal” cars from other manufacturers (Chrysler, Jaguar, etc…) to give them driving autonomy characteristics.

Waymo is the company that has made more millions of kilometers with its cars and has the most information and experience. It goes ahead of the others, despite Mr. Musk’s opinions.

Today, ALL car companies are working in this field, investing huge amounts of money, following more or less similar paths.

Despite everything they invest, some will remain off the hook in terms of the results of their cars and will have to seek agreements with others to transfer their technology. If not, they will stay out of the market and disappear.

Everything seems to indicate that Waymo can be a winning horse in terms of having that technology.

With the agreement signed, Renault and its partners take a good step to be in the lead squad.
