Macron announces the manufacture of a new nuclear aircraft carrier
France has always maintained a certain strategic independence with respect to the big ones on the issue of nuclear energy, both to manufacture its nuclear power plants to generate electricity, and its nuclear defense systems (bombs, submarines, aircraft carriers, etc …)
They have recently announced the manufacture of a new nuclear powered aircraft carrier that will replace the Charles de Gaulle in 2038.
It is a project of about 6,000 million euros that demonstrates the will of France to continue maintaining the independence that it has had until now in the field of Defense.
It will be a 75,000-ton ship, with a speed of 27 knots, 330 meters in length and almost 45 in width that will be able to carry more than 30 combat aircraft, some surveillance aircraft (Haweyes type) and a number not determined from remotely controlled drones.
It is planned to start cutting sheet metal in 2025, so that its sea trials can be carried out from 2036 and that in 2038 it can be delivered to the Navy. A most ambitious project.
Being able to carry out a project of these characteristics gives an idea of the country that is behind. It requires mastery of many top-notch technologies that are also useful for other types of collateral projects.
I am sure that this decision has been very well thought out and the message that France sends to the world is: I am still here and I still have nuclear capacity.
And in this case, what may be good for France may also be good for Europe.
As I have said on more than one occasion, technology is what makes countries take the lead, and a boat of these characteristics implies cutting-edge technologies of all kinds.
I think it is a good decision, especially for France.
