Large oil companies spend millions on social media to promote their interests

The big oil companies are not silly and now the money they spend on social networks is not to go against climate change (that would be unwise since almost no one denies it anymore), but to publish that the products they sell ( oil, gas, etc …) are good for the climate.

InfluenceMap is an independent think tank that provides data and analysis of how business affects climate change. And in August of this year it published a report on how the large oil companies led by Exxon Mobil have sent messages to the networks in 2020,

Millions of dollars have been spent and on Facebook alone they have been seen by more than 431 million people in the US alone. Which means that many of these messages have been viewed multiple times by the same people to give them a greater sense of credibility.

Most of the money was spent between June and November of the year 2020, just before the North American elections promoting positions opposed to that of Mr. Biden to try to prevent him from reaching the presidency.

In the bottom photo are the most important companies and the benefits they achieve in a quarter, and that allows them to move their influence as much as they can.

The messages they sent were very pragmatic and somewhat patriotic, and could be grouped into several types:

– We are companies that generate many jobs

– We support the transition of the energy mix

– We work to reduce gas emissions

– Gasoline and gas are inexpensive and reliable products

– We favor the energy independence of the USA

– Etc ….

Messages that are intended to be positive and that their intention is to delay as much as possible the adoption of measures that reduce the consumption of their fuels, and therefore their business.

Facebook is the social network that has received the most money from these companies, and its resistance to eliminating many of the lies that are published on it is well known.

Anyone who is interested can access this report by entering the link below. It’s worth it.

The cynicism of these companies has no limits. For more than 40 years they denied climate change, and now that it is undeniable and we are beginning to suffer they stop denying it to go on to say that they support the energy transition, how good they are for society, and blah blah blah….

And worst of all, many governments still subsidize fossil fuels.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), fossil fuels receive more than 220,000 million euros per year and renewable energies just 40,000 million. Incredible but true.

And the question that arises is: are we all crazy?
