Is IBM reinventing itself again?
Well, it seems so, and it does so by breaking down its activities into two separate companies and giving the new company (NewCo) total autonomy.
IBM is a company that is more than 100 years old and has always been at the forefront of computing technology, and in order to stay ahead over time it has spun off some businesses as happened with personal computers, the manufacture of disks (disk drives), etc.
For any company it is very difficult to stay “up” and all of them make changes to adapt to the new times; and those that do not adapt end up falling and disappearing.
Recently, IBM has made a profound and strategic change. It has separated an important part of its business to create a new company (the name remains to be defined) and within IBM remain the activities of Artificial Intelligence and the businesses of a hybrid cloud.
IBM cannot compete with the most powerful cloud companies (Amazon, Microsoft, Google) and advocates offering a hybrid cloud that links its own cloud with other internal companies, or with the clouds of its competitors.
IBM offers a “global” solution to large clients with special needs.
What remains within the “new” IBM ”is three-quarters of today’s business, but they are also the ones with the greatest potential for future growth.
It is more than clear that computing is in the “cloud” and will continue to develop from it. And the people of IBM want to play a relevant role in that field.
That together with the AI that is going to affect all the activities of our life are the two fields of the “new IBM” for the future.
The future remains to be seen, but this move makes a lot of sense and IBM is concentrating on more future-oriented activities.
Other decisions they made in the past, such as abandoning personal computing (PC computers), have paid off, and hopefully it won’t go bad either.
They are the ones who know about computing
