Is “green hydrogen” going to be a fuel of the near future?
When we speak of “green hydrogen” it refers to that which is obtained in an ecological and non-polluting way, and it’s obtained from electrical energy generated in “clean” ways (solar, wind, etc …), and that electrical energy is applied to a process of electrolysis of water to obtain hydrogen.
I have said it quickly and in summary, but today it is a complex and expensive process, due to the high cost of the energy consumed.
What happens is that renewable energies are reducing their costs in a surprising way and are already competitive with other traditional power generation systems.
On the other hand, there are activities that consume polluting energies (fossil fuels) and that could use hydrogen to function without generating environmental pollution.
In these cases, today the use of “green” hydrogen is expensive but as energy costs fall it could be “useful” in not long time. At which time it could be used to move ships, trains, trucks, etc …
Things have to change a lot for hydrogen to be an alternative fuel, but an opportunity opens up due to the need for alternative energy sources for our society.
Hydrogen is more delicate to handle than fossil fuels, and it’s used at high pressure, with whatever that might entail. But for almost everything there is a solution.
In my opinion, the most delicate issue is “safety”, and that in the event of an accident (which will eventually end up occurring) an explosion of unfortunate consequences is not generated.
There are countries like Australia that have a lot of sun and that are betting on this green hydrogen for their own use and are even thinking of exporting it.
Possibly not a bad idea.
It is in times of change like the current ones that those who position themselves in the right direction for the future, get the greatest benefits for the days to come.
Unfortunately, I see my country (Spain) lost in short-term partisan political disputes and without defining where it wants to focus its future.
I don’t think we’re going to be heading in the right direction at all.
