Few people know the car brand Polestar
It is an independent car brand that is associated with Volvo and has specialized in the manufacture of hybrid and electric cars.
I guess it’s a way Volvo has found to prepare for the future that is already here.
And the truth is that the “way” Polestar approaches cars is a bit different from other brands.
They have focused on the vehicle interaction with its owner. And to facilitate this connection they have designed an Information Unit (IU) that is based on the car’s connection to the vehicle owner’s mobile.
In its latest model, the car does not even have a power button. Everything is done with the mobile, from opening the door, to starting it.
The UI has a Google Assistant system with which all communication between the car and the driver can be done by voice, so you don’t have to take your hands off the wheel.
The Polestar 1 model they launched was a plug-in hybrid that could perform 150 km in electric mode, as it had a good battery to store charge.
And the new Polestar 2 (which will appear between this year and next one) is fully electric and can perform 500 km before needing a new charge. It is very clear that it is a direct competitor of Tesla S.
At the moment they only manufacture a few hundred cars a year, and it remains to be seen if with such low productions they are able to generate benefits that compensate for the enormous development and investment expenses for their manufacture.
The people of Polestar also offer their customers the possibility of using the car “only” when they need it, and paying according to the use of the car. For which they take it to their house, and they pick it up when the customer has just used it.
It’s a “pay per service” very in fashion these days, and that is increasingly being tested by other car manufacturers.
It is clear that it evolves towards the digital car, interconnected and shared by users. Some will find it a bit difficult to change the “chip”, but it seems to be the way of the future; and each one looks in that direction in his own way.
Of course, as I said at the beginning, it is possible that Volvo has found the way to get experience in this type of cars, while still manufacturing cars for a lifetime, and making money with them.
Everyone looks for their own particular direction to find a place in the market’s sun.
