AI and the future of people’s jobs

Lately the subject of AI is one of the most talked about, and there is also concern about how it could affect people’s jobs in the near future.

AI is a set of technologies that allow machines to learn from data and perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as decision making, natural language processing, etc… And these capabilities are transforming and will continue to transform many jobs in almost all areas: industry, medicine, logistics, IT, law, etc….

It is a new technology unknown to the vast majority, and with very disruptive capabilities. Algorithms and their machine learning systems are kept very secret, technology is in the hands of very few, and all this increases people’s distrust of it.

We have only seen a few small examples of future possibilities with the ChatGPT program, and a more powerful possibility has already been put on the market in a short time (of course for a fee), and all this causes great concern about how these tools can affect the life and work of the people.

And to make the situation worse, it doesn’t help when some organizations publish “Reports” of what may happen in the future, as is the case with Goldman Sachs with its report saying that AI could replace 300 million jobs. That is only talking to talk, since they are “estimates” based on imprecise data that are later extrapolated. That is, reports with very little foundation.

Like all technological change, AI will offer opportunities and threats. And I have no doubt that it will improve people’s quality of life. But such a big change will also have serious counterparts, especially for those who resist receiving professional formation and do not want to prepare for the coming changes.

Education and training will be essential for everyone, both workers and users, and we must all try to develop new skills to take advantage of this technological change. Because dear friends, this technology is here to stay and to continue to develop.

At the moment, the apocalyptic and scary messages I think benefit the few companies that master this technology, so that other companies pay them good money for their services, which of course they keep in their private clouds where the rest must access. And that is a good form of control.

In general, companies like new technological developments because with them they try to improve their competitiveness, but in the case of AI, it has the added incentive that the feeling of urgency that is being created encourages companies to try to be the first to use these new tools to see how much they are able to save with them, and do it before the competition.

The friends of Microsoft, Open AI, Google, etc… are anything but stupid.
