In the current context, where the fight against climate change is a global priority, the news of the development of a product capable of reducing methane emissions in cows represents an important advance. This product, developed by the Bovaer company, may have the potential to transform the livestock industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Methane is a greenhouse gas with a global warming power 25 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. Its main source in the atmosphere is livestock activity, especially that of ruminants such as cows.

During digestion, these animals produce methane as a natural byproduct. While this process is essential for its metabolism, the large amounts of methane released into the atmosphere represent a significant problem for the environment.

Each cow generates around 500 liters of methane gas per day, and there are 1.6 billion cows in the world, so these cattle generate greenhouse gases that account for 14% of global emissions. And there are 3 countries: USA, China and Brazil that have 30% of all the livestock in the world.

The information available about the product is still limited, as it is in an initial development and commercialization phase. However, it has been mentioned that it is a food additive that is mixed with cow feed. And they hope to start selling it this year.

Its mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of the activity of microorganisms present in the rumen, the stomach of these animals. These microorganisms are responsible for the production of methane during digestion.

You can see the company’s WEB at: https://www.dsm.com/anh/products-and-services/products/methane-inhibitors/bovaer.html

The company announces a reduction of methane gases of around 30%, which is a good first step in the right direction. But in less developed countries this supplement can be very expensive.

Although I suppose that over time other products will appear that improve the results, and this contamination can be eliminated, since beef consumption globally continues to increase.

It is very important that consumers understand the importance of reducing methane emissions and support the adoption of sustainable practices in the livestock industry.

As always, time will tell us how this matter evolves.
