The cruise industry is one of the major contributors to climate change. In 2019, cruise ships emitted more than 100 million tons of CO2, making them more polluting than the entire aviation industry.

But there is new hope for the future of cruising. In 2023, Hurtigruten Norway presented its concept that it called Sea Zero, and it is the first cruise ship in the world with zero emissions.

The Sea Zero is a 135-meter (443-foot) long ship that can carry 500 passengers and a crew of 99. It is powered by a combination of shore-charged batteries, retractable wind sails, and solar panels.

Batteries are the heart of the Sea Zero propulsion system. They have a capacity of 60 megawatt-hours, enough to power the ship for up to 12 hours at a cruising speed of 15 knots.

Wind sails are a new technology being developed by Hurtigruten Norway. They are retractable, so they can be stored away when not in use. The sails have a total area of 750 square meters (8,073 square feet) and can generate up to 1 megawatt of power.

Solar panels are located on the roof of the ship. They have a capacity of 1 megawatt and can generate enough power to meet the power needs of the ship while it is docked.

In addition to its zero-emission propulsion system, the Sea Zero also features a host of other sustainability features. These include:

A hull that is designed to reduce drag, which improves fuel efficiency.

An underwater air lubrication system further reduces water resistance.

Hydrodynamic retractable thrusters that help the boat to maneuver more efficiently.

Smart cabins that monitor energy consumption and provide feedback to passengers.

Sea Zero is a significant step forward for the cruise industry. It shows that it is possible to build a cruise ship that is both environmentally friendly and luxurious.

The launch of the Sea Zero is scheduled for 2030. it will operate along the Norwegian coast, offering passengers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the Norwegian fjords without contributing to climate change.

Sea Zero is a symbol of hope for the future of the cruise industry and the environment. It shows that it is possible to build boats that are eco-friendly and cost-effective. If Sea Zero is successful, it could help make the cruise industry more sustainable and protect the environment for future generations.

The Sea Zero is just the beginning of the future of zero emission cruising. As technology continues to develop, we are likely to see more zero emission cruise ships being built.

In the not too distant future, we may see cruise ships powered by a variety of renewable energy sources, including solar power, wind power, hydrogen fuel cells, or other zero emission technologies.

Zero emission cruises have a future. As technology continues to develop, we will see more and more cruise ships and other large ships running on clean energy. This will help reduce the environmental impact of the cruise industry and shipping in general, and make it more sustainable.

And I hope it happens as soon as possible!
