100% renewable energy is already possible at an efficient cost

That’s what a study by the Energy Watch Group and LUT University indicates. In the study they simulated how it is possible to go from a realistic and economically viable way to having clean energy for Europe before the year 2050.

And most importantly, they demonstrate that it can be done in a competitive way with the current technological means. Any other technological improvement that occurs over time will serve to improve and facilitate this transition.

For me there are two very important things:

One, they provide a concrete plan on how it could be done

Two, that it can be done economically competitive right now

The proposal they make for the generation of electricity has a distribution of 69% solar, 18% wind, 8% hydro and the rest distributed in collateral technologies.

The great “problem” of clean energy is its “variability”. The sun and the wind vary, so means are needed to generate an excess of energy and to be stored to be able to be used when light and wind are not available.

In this study, we propose to have storage batteries, when there are others who advocate storing gases that can be consumed at those times. Being those gases obtained with the remaining clean energies.

There are several alternatives, but there is no time to lose to start investing in the main means of energy generation (solar and wind) that allow us to be in a totally different energy situation in a few years.

Nearly 800,000 jobs related to coal will be lost along the way, but nearly 3 million will be generated related to new technologies. The sooner it is done, the better for everyone.

But it is the politicians and the industrialists who must promote these changes, informing and raising awareness among citizens, and adopting measures that promote these necessary changes.

There are no technological or economic barriers, only mental barriers. And therefore there are no excuses.
